Cosmetic injectables work by relaxing the muscles that cause the wrinkles. When used medically, it's used to target muscles with too much activity and strength such as in bruxism (jaw clenching/teeth grinding). It is a prescription only medication that act on the nerves of targeted muscles to reduce their strength and ability to contract. Over time, nerves of affected muscles will adapt to the effects of anti-wrinkle injections and eventually restore its full function, and is why the effects of anti-wrinkle treatments are only temporary. 

When muscles are weakened over an extended period of time, they gradually atrophy (shrink), and is why with regular treatments, some individuals may notice they don't need to be treated as often or they don't require as high of a dose because the muscles have atrophied to the point they now take longer to build up enough strength to cause symptoms again. 

It can take up to 2 weeks for the full effects of anti-wrinkle/muscle relaxant injectables to fully kick in. However some individuals may notice gradual improvement as early as 3-4 days. If however by 2 weeks there are any concerns, please get in touch to schedule a follow-up appointment. 

Generally speaking, the effects of anti-wrinkle/muscle relaxant injectables will gradually wear off over a period of 2-4 months, but can vary depending on individual health characteristics, dose, frequency of treatment, and how long you've received regular treatments. Some patients may notice the benefits can last longer (4-6months) especially if they have been receiving regular injections for some time. 

On the other hand if the hyperactivity of the muscle is severe, and depending on a number of lifestyle factors (such as high stress), individual health characteristics, or even some medications, the symptoms can return faster (2 months). Anti-wrinkle/Muscle Relaxant injections are not suitable in certain circumstances, some include:

• Those who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• Those with broken, inflamed, or infected skin over the treatment site(s)
• Those with allergies to anti-wrinkle injectables
• Those who develop keloid scarring to needle injections
• Those with neuromuscular disorders such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert-Eaton Syndrome, and certain other myopathies.
• Those with gross motor weakness in treatment area(s) such as in Bell’s Palsy
